The Diverse Alumni Network strives to build and maintain an active and engaged community of UMKC Law diverse alumni

Our Mission

The UMKC Law Diverse Alumni Network seeks to aid in fostering an inclusive environment at the UMKC School of Law and in the Kansas City legal community where diversity is valued and celebrated. The Diverse Alumni Network strives to build and maintain an active and engaged community of UMKC Law diverse alumni committed to influencing diversity initiatives and serving as a resource to current UMKC law students of diverse backgrounds. The Diverse Alumni Network also serves its members by providing opportunities to network, socialize, and share experiences unique to diverse members of the legal community in an effort to propel the legal profession forward.

About Us

Members of the Diverse Alumni Network are alumni of UMKC School of Law who identify as racially/ethnically diverse—including, but not limited to, African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander—or LGBTQ+. The leadership of the Diverse Alumni Network serves as a committee of the UMKC Law Alumni Association.

Founded in 2020, the Diverse Alumni Network had a successful founding year despite the Covid-19 pandemic. We have hosted and participated in the following events:

  • Provided support to the UMKC Law Diverse Student Coalition in planning and executing the Annual Diversity Banquet - a fundraiser for the endowed Diverse Student Coalition Scholarship.
  • Initiated a Bar Exam Membership program to provide mentorship to our diverse graduates.
  • Hosted a virtual speed networking event with the goal of linking diverse UMKC School of Law alumni with diverse law students.
  • Initiated a Quick Conversations program to provide support and motivation to law students as they navigate virtual law school.
  • Worked with Administration to add a question to the law school application that allows LGBTQ+ applicants to self-identify.
  • Put initiatives in place to increase our diverse alumni records and generate diverse alumni engagement

Upcoming Events

The Diverse Alumni Network hosts events and workshops throughout the year. Please view the calendar of Alumni Events for our upcoming events.

Bar Exam Mentorship Program

The Bar Exam Mentorship program assists graduates in navigating all the stresses that come with studying for the bar exam. Recent diverse graduates preparing to sit for the bar exam are connected with diverse alumni and are given assistance with study schedules, stress management, and other non-substantive aspects of preparing for the exam.

In the previous year, we successfully matched 16 graduates with diverse mentors and look forward to increasing that number in the coming years.

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor or mentee, please contact us at

Speed Networking Event

The Speed Networking event is virtual networking event that is a low-stress opportunity designed to help diverse law students in building a network and polishing skills as they move forward with other networking and interview opportunities. Participants get a chance to engage with local diverse attorneys and judges via virtual breakout rooms that periodically rotate. The Speed Networking event is co-sponsored by the UMKC Law Diverse Alumni Network and the Diverse Student Coalition.

Diverse Student Coalition

The UMKC Law Diverse Student Coalition advocates for the interests of the law school’s diverse student organizations, including the Black Law Students Association, the Latino Law Students Association, the Asian Pacific Islander Law Students Association, and the OutLaws (the LGBTQ+ students association). With the help of the Diverse Alumni Network, the Diverse Student Coalition hosts the Diversity Banquet every year to celebrate diversity in the legal community, honor the Diverse Student Coalition Scholarship recipient(s), and raise funds for the scholarship. The Diverse Student Coalition Scholarship is awarded each year to one or more diverse incoming law students. The goal is to maintain a meaningful and sustainable scholarship that can significantly alleviate the financial burden of attending law school.
