The Diverse Alumni Network seeks to aid in fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is valued and celebrated at the UMKC School of Law and in the Kansas City legal community. The Diverse Alumni Network strives to build and maintain an engaged, inclusive and diverse community of UMKC Law alumni committed to influencing initiatives and serving as a resource to all current UMKC law students. The Diverse Alumni Network also serves its members by providing opportunities to network, socialize and share experiences unique to members of the legal community in an effort to propel the legal profession forward.
Members of the Diverse Alumni Network are alumni of UMKC School of Law. The leadership of the Diverse Alumni Network serves as a committee of the UMKC Law Alumni Association.
Founded in 2020, the Diverse Alumni Network has hosted and participated in these events.
The Diverse Alumni Network hosts events and workshops throughout the year. Please view the calendar of Alumni Events for our upcoming events.
The Speed Networking event is virtual networking event that is a low-stress opportunity designed to help law students build a network and polish skills as they move forward with other networking and interview opportunities. Participants get a chance to engage with local attorneys and judges via virtual breakout rooms that periodically rotate. The Speed Networking event is co-sponsored by the UMKC Law Diverse Alumni Network and the Diverse Student Coalition.
The UMKC Law Diverse Student Coalition advocates for the interests of the law school’s student organizations. With the help of the Diverse Alumni Network, the Diverse Student Coalition hosts the Diversity Banquet every year to celebrate diversity in the legal community, honor the Diverse Student Coalition Scholarship recipient(s) and raise funds for the scholarship. The Diverse Student Coalition Scholarship is awarded each year to one or more incoming law students. The goal is to maintain a meaningful and sustainable scholarship that can significantly alleviate the financial burden of attending law school.
The Bar Exam Mentorship program assists graduates in navigating all the stresses that come with studying for the bar exam. Recent graduates preparing to sit for the bar exam are connected with alumni and are given assistance with study schedules, stress management and other non-substantive aspects of preparing for the exam.
In the previous year, we successfully matched 16 graduates with mentors and look forward to increasing that number in the coming years.
If you’re interested in becoming a mentor or mentee, please contact us at umkclawdiverse@umsystem.edu.
