Student Spotlight: Isabel Penaranda Ali, J.D. December 2022
Why did you choose to attend UMKC School of Law?
I was first attracted to UMKC School of Law for its excellent LL.M program. I have been impressed with the welcoming community at the School of Law, its excellent academic level, and approachable professors. I also enjoy UMKC’s location in the heart of K.C.
What has been your most rewarding experience so far?
As an immigrant, I’m blessed to be interning in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri for the Honorable Judge Stephen Bough and having a future summer clerkship at the McCrummen Immigration Law Group.
The law school’s career center is incredibly supportive and helpful. They complement the school’s excellent academic standards as they prepare students for real-life legal experiences, from preparing resumes, mock interviews, leading students to finding internships, summer jobs and even potential employers. I realize that these opportunities wouldn’t be possible without the reputable standing of UMKC School of Law and its role in our legal community.
What interests you about the law?
Law interests me because it is a powerful tool in making a difference in the world. Law provides the opportunity to work for truth and justice, seeking the best for people and society.
What do you plan to do with your law degree?
I plan to work in business immigration or another business-related area of the law.
Tell us two interesting facts about yourself.
While this is my third law degree, (J.D.-Universidad Mayor de San Simon and LL.M-UMKC), it is in a new country, in my second language and while raising two kids at home.
I have clerked for the first female President of the highest court of Cochabamba, Bolivia.
