Each year the UMKC Alumni Association honors a family with deep ties to our University. This year’s legacy family is the North/Cheadle family and two members of that family are graduates of UMKC School of Law. Basil North Jr. was the first in his family to graduate from Kansas City’s university with his B.A. in 1961. He went on to attend night classes at the Law School (then, the University of Kansas City School of Law) while working full time during the day. Mr. North graduated with his law degree in 1971, one of 13 of an original class of 65 members. He then began what was to become a career of not only extraordinary legal practice, but consistent mentoring of young Black lawyers. Over his career, he personally hired or mentored over 50 Black attorneys in their legal career, most of whom were fellow graduates from UMKC School of Law. In 2004, Mr. North was awarded the prestigious Lewis W. Clymer Award by the Jackson County Bar Association in recognition of his remarkable career and impact. North’s family legacy continues with his daughter Maria North Morgan (J.D. ’91), whose career has focused on civil rights. Congratulations to Basil North, Jr. and Maria North Morgan and the entire North/Cheadle family!
