Arthur did what many Kansas Citians do when they buy a car in a bi-state city; he bought a car from out-of-state. He believed he had all the paperwork he needed to complete registration, but it turned out that he did not have the title for the car. He could not use or sell the vehicle without its title, and he hoped a simple trip to the courthouse would resolve the problem. When he arrived at the courthouse, he discovered they could not provide the assistance he needed.
Thankfully, he was referred to the Self-Help Clinic at the UMKC School of Law.
The Self-Help Clinic not only provided all the paperwork Arthur needed and guided him through completing it, but the Clinic’s volunteers also told him what to expect in court. Arthur felt he now had the confidence he needed to represent himself. After following the steps the Self-Help Clinic advised, Arthur had his court hearing, and his petition was approved. He now has proper title for his vehicle.
These “minor” legal matters become so overwhelming to those in our community who have not handled a legal dilemma or cannot afford a private attorney. Arthur felt so much relief having guidance from the Self-Help Clinic. He felt organized and prepared, and he happily recommends the services of the Self-Help Clinic to anyone in the community who needs legal advice.
The UMKC School of Law is proud to serve the community while providing students with hands-on legal training in the Self-Help Clinic and any of its other nine community support clinics.
The UMKC Law Foundation was established to support the School of Law in its mission to be student centered, community connected, and justice driven.
Your gift to the UMKC Law Foundation today ensures the continued tradition of hands-on legal education for the next generation of lawyers, many of whom will practice in Kansas City.
