On Thursday, May 4 2017, UMKC School of Law hosted a Faculty Luncheon at the Diastole Scholar’s Center to recognize and award faculty members for their service and accomplishments. Our successful programs are made possible by our dedicated faculty, and they continue to improve different aspects of law education to benefit students.
Professor Wanda Temm received the Daniel L. Brenner Faculty Publishing Award for her book on bar preparation. The book is titled Clearing the Last Hurdle: Mapping Success on the Bar Exam. It is a complete resource for navigating every type of bar exam. The book features substantive outlines for every Multistate Bar Exam and Multistate Essay Exam topic with practice questions in the format of multiple choice, essay, and performance test. The book also offers a score sheet to measure the student’s progress. Temm is the founder of the UMKC Bar Prep Program. She previously received the 2013 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching–UMKC’s highest honor for excellence in teaching for clinical faculty. She also received the 2012 Women’s Justice Legal Scholar Award from Missouri Lawyers’ Media.
Another Daniel L. Brenner Faculty Publishing Award was given to Professor John Ragsdale for his an article, “The Ozark National Scenic Riverways and the Sagebrush Rebillion in Missouri” 49 Urban Lawyers 1 (2017). Ragsdale received his J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School in 1969 and his LL.M. from UMKC in 1972. After graduating from law school, Ragsdale worked as a law clerk to Judge Phillips of the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. In 1971, he became an associate in the firm of Humphrey and Woods in Denver, Co. He joined the UMKC Law School faculty in 1972.
Professor Tim Lynch was recognized for winning the Elmer F. Pierson Good Teaching Award earlier this semester. Lynch received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, his MBA from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and his BA from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the faculty, Lynch taught as a visiting assistant professor at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. His scholarship is principally in the areas of international capital markets and international trade. He teaches the courses International Trade Law and Finance, International Business Transactions, Conflicts of Law, and International Environmental Law.
Professor Chris Holman received the Marvin Lewis Rich Faculty Scholar Award in recognition of his excellent body of work integrating scholarly achievement and teaching. Holman joined the UMKC faculty in 2005, and his primary research focus lies at the intersection of intellectual property and biotechnology. He has published numerous articles in law reviews and scientific publications such as “Science, Cell and Nature Biotechnology,” and has authored amicus briefs in a number of important biotechnology patent cases at the Supreme Court and Federal Circuit. In 2008, he was awarded the Daniel L Brenner Faculty Publishing Award for an influential law review article on human gene patent litigation.
Additionally, Associate Dean Allen Rostron was awarded 2017 Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence In Teaching earlier this year. The award is presented to a single outstanding faculty member at each participating Missouri college or university. In 2016, Rostron also received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
