The Summer Start program provides students with a flexible scheduling option that will permit an early start, with either a shorter time to graduation or a more relaxed pace for the program, depending on how students schedule the remainder of their education. Specific program information will be posted here as it becomes available.
Students interested in participating in Summer Start must apply to the Law School by March 1. Summer Start is open to any admitted student, although seats in the Summer Start Program are limited and will be filled in the order seat deposits are received. Both seat deposits of $250 must be paid by May 1.
The Summer Start schedule begins with a mandatory orientation program mid-May which provides a course on law school academic strategies, an introduction to resources at the law school, and an orientation to administrative aspects of law school, such as policies and resources.
Summer classes, just as in the first semester of law school, will focus on mastering the analytical skills of legal method and learning some foundational doctrinal concepts. For example, Summer Start students in 2022 took 3 courses, two of which were a part of the regular 1L curriculum.
A select offering of additional classes will be available to students by request and with the approval of the Associate Dean for Students. In consultation with their faculty adviser, students may then choose an upper-level course in their first year.
Financial Aid will be available. For the summer term, you will need to fill out or add our school code to the FAFSA for the 2022-2023 academic year (in addition to your FAFSA for the 2023-2024 academic year). Our school code is 002518. For questions regarding financial aid, please contact the UMKC Financial Aid Office.
The Summer 2023 tuition and fee costs for Missouri residents (or those receiving non-resident tuition scholarships) is $702.10 per credit hour, for non-residents, $902.10 per credit hour.
