Over the last approximately two decades, we have witnessed significantly expanding interest and initiatives in social entrepreneurship—a movement that crosses the boundaries of the business, nonprofit, and public sectors, and is rapidly growing. This Eighth Midwest Symposium on Social Entrepreneurship offers a forum to continue the advancement of social entrepreneurship thinking, teaching, practice, and associated tools. The event promotes collaborative exchange of knowledge and experiences through presentations and interactive discussions among entrepreneurs, business and nonprofit practitioners, teachers, researchers, funders, government, and others interested in sharing and shaping learning focused on community building and promoting successful social entrepreneurship.
The Symposium commences with welcoming remarks from representatives of its co-hosts, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), and of the United States Association for Small Business & Entrepreneurship (USASBE), and a kick-off address by Philip Gaskin, the Kauffman Foundation’s Vice President of Entrepreneurship.
Morning and afternoon workshops will then be offered in three tracks: (1) Duties and Social Purpose; (2) Recent Trends and Innovations in Social Entrepreneurship; and (3) Capital Raising for Social Enterprises and Related Policy and Planning Considerations. A luncheon plenary panel session will examine ways in which social entrepreneurship is being facilitated and supported through innovation programs, incubators, and communities of practice that draw on creative and collaborative efforts of neighborhoods, local governments, nonprofit organizations, educators, and the business community. A presentations event showcasing the work of Kansas City region social entrepreneurs and individuals from across the country involved in a USASBE social entrepreneurship program will follow the afternoon workshops.
