Our extensive curriculum includes many opportunities to interact with members of the community and develop practice skills essential to this field. Students can clerk for judges in family court, represent adults who give permanent homes to children under the court’s jurisdiction, represent victims of domestic violence, mentor teens in youth court, represent the state in child support proceedings and act as guardians ad litem for children.
Our strong connections to local and national family law judges and attorneys give students important networking opportunities. Students graduating with the emphasis have critical practice skills that serve them well, even if they choose not to specialize in child or family law.
This society provides law students with information and experiences within the field of family law, allows students to become acquainted with professionals in the field, promotes student interest in family law, and encourages family law education throughout the UMKC Law School student body.
The Family Law Society also supports the UMKC Family Services Clinic in its mission to provide legal services for parents, relatives and custodians needing assistance to obtain custodial orders to achieve permanency for children.
