The Summer Start Program provides students with a flexible scheduling option that will permit an early start, with either a shorter time to graduation or a more relaxed pace for the program, depending on how students schedule the remainder of their education.
Summer Start this year will be done online rather than in person. This means that you will not need to come to campus in Kansas City in order to participate in the Summer Start program. For full details about how the shift to online classes this year is planned, please read the below letter from the Summer Start faculty.

Enrollment and Eligibility
Students interested in participating in Summer Start must apply to the Law School by March 1. Summer Start is open to any admitted student, although seats in the Summer Start Program are limited and will be filled in the order seat deposits are received. Both seat deposits of $250 must be paid by May 1.
The Summer Start schedule begins with a mandatory orientation program mid-May which provides an overview of law school academic strategies, an introduction to resources in the law school, and an orientation to administrative aspects of law school (policies and resources).
Summer classes, just as in the first semester of law school, will focus on mastering the analytical skills of legal method and learning some foundational doctrinal concepts.
Students in the 2020 Summer Start Program will take one or more of the following classes:
- Torts – 3 credit hours (graduation requirement)
- Lawyering Skills I – 3 credit hours (graduation requirement)
- Professional Responsibility – 2 credit hours (graduation requirement)
Summer Start students will begin the Fall semester with up to eight credit hours completed toward their degree. In consultation with their faculty adviser, students may then choose an upper-level course in their first year.

For the summer term, you will need to fill out or add our school code to the FAFSA for the 2019-2020 academic year (in addition to your FAFSA for the 2019-2020 academic year). Our school code is 002518. For questions regarding financial aid, please contact the UMKC Financial Aid Office.
