Why did you decide to attend law school? And more specifically UMKC?

I decided I wanted to be a lawyer when I was 13. I grew up in law enforcement and the laws and intricacies of the laws always fascinated me. I decided to go to UMKC because, after touring another school, I saw the community and the support the students had, not just with each other, but with the faculty as well. With being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just 6 months before starting law school, I knew I was going to need that support. UMKC offered that and so much more.

What has been the biggest challenge as a law student?

Trying to find that home/work life balance, for sure. I was getting to school around 7 am, getting home around 5pm, eating dinner, then sitting on my couch doing homework until 11pm before finally going to bed. I realized I couldn't keep working this way or else I was going to be burned out. Now, I treat school like an 8am-5pm job. When I go home, I try to avoid touching my homework as much as possible.

What are your interests outside of law school?

I spend time with my dog (a 1-year-old labradoodle named Gunner), read lots and lots of books, color in my adult coloring books, watch true crime documentaries and a few (not so) reality TV shows, hiking, being outside, trying new things, and hanging out with my friends outside of the school environment.

What is one piece of advice you would give to future law students?

Don't be afraid to take a mental health day every now and then. School and work will always be there and there is always something you could be doing for them, but if you don't take care of yourself first, then you'll just be going through the motions and not enjoying the time you have in law school.
