Why did you decide to attend law school? And more specifically UMKC?
I chose UMKC to be closer to my support system, the chance to network with local attorneys and judges, and the events available to get to know other students. I was also drawn to UMKC through the work of Sean O'Brien in criminal law and wrongful convictions. I chose to attend law school in general due to my desire to help with sentencing mitigation and defense of those who can't afford private attorneys in low income and inner city areas. I have a passion for helping people and for prison reform. I think UMKC will help me translate those passions into meaningful work in the community.
What has been the biggest challenge as a law student?
Focus. There is a lot of information for many different classes that you have to balance.
What are your interests outside of law school?
Art and creative writing. Any creative outlet gets me into a good headspace and refocuses my energy.
What is one piece of advice you would give to future law students?
Get ahead. Read early, and make sure you have time for yourself and your people. Be willing to meet other students so you have a good foundation going in to the school you choose.
