Why give to the UMKC School of Law Foundation Annual Fund?

What is the Annual Fund?

The UMKC School of Law Foundation Annual Fund provides support to areas of greatest need within the Law School.

How are Annual Fund gifts used?

Money alone cannot make a law school great; but a great law school cannot realize and maintain its ambitions without vigorous private support.

Annual Fund gifts at every level are very much appreciated and the cumulative effect of all unrestricted gifts—about $180,000 a year—all adds up to make a measurable and meaningful difference in the quality and capacity of UMKC School of Law.

The Law Foundation Board of Trustees sets the annual budget with the goal of enhancing the law school experience for students and faculty.  100% of gifts to the Law Annual Fund helps support:

  1. Trial team competitions
  2. Student organizations
  3. Diversity scholarships and program support
  4. Faculty research grants
  5. The alumni magazine published twice a year

How many alumni give to the Annual Fund?

Traditionally, about 10% of UMKC law alumni make a gift each year.  This ranks us second in alumni participation among the schools at UMKC.  Our immediate goal in the next three years is to double our participation rate. A longer term goal is to have a consistent participation rate of at least 25%. Every gift is important because it increases our participation rate.

Why is the participation rate important?

The participation rate of a college’s alumni is often used to indicate alumni satisfaction. Organizations that rank colleges and universities, and many foundations use alumni giving participation as a key factor when considering grant support.

Why should alumni give to a state school?

State support of the law school has declined significantly over the past decade. In 2013, only about 10% of the school’s budget is provided by tax revenue.  Private gifts therefore make an even greater impact on the college’s future.

In the fall of 2013, a re-accreditation review was conducted of the Law School. The review team members were extremely impressed with all reviewed aspects of the law school. They marveled at how UMKC Law School is now and has been a national leader in such areas as advocacy, entrepreneurship, and family law. The quality of the school is reflective of the consistent high rate of bar passage (92.5%) and employment (90.2%) They were very complimentary of the facility renovations which were accomplished only by significant support from our alumni and friends.

Increased participation and support from our alumni makes a huge difference to keep this momentum going. Alumni can be assured that their gifts are greatly valued and will be spent wisely.

What if I’d like to designate my gift?

Your unrestricted gift gives us the flexibility to direct funding where it is most needed. However, you may also designate your gift for a particular purpose in the Law Foundation’s budget.
