“What Will Law Look Like in 2026?” – UMKC Law Hosts Futures Conference

DSC_4892From September 15-16, the UMKC School of Law hosted the 2016 College of Law Practice Management Futures Conference. Each fall, the conference brings together multi-disciplined professionals for two days to discuss the current and future state of the legal industry. The conference also recognizes the industry’s thought leaders at its InnoAction Awards Luncheon. Legal professionals sought to answer the question: “What Will Law Look Like in 2026?”

UMKC Law Student Succeeds in Amending Family Law Code

After experiencing the lack of protections for children in custody cases that involve domestic abuse, Jill Ainsworth, a third year law student at UMKC School of Law, decided to find a way to advocate for these children. Now, a portion of the bill Ainsworth wrote is going into effect in Kansas.

Airbnb and Discrimination: Professor Jamila Jefferson-Jones Weighs In


Jamila Jefferson webIs it time for the government to regulate Airbnb? Or do we allow this innovative platform to catch up to existing anti-discrimination laws?

Professor Jamila Jefferson-Jones, of UMKC School of Law, has explored this question with reporters from the New York Times, Quartz, and Aljazeera. Jefferson-Jones recently published an essay in the Fordham Urban Law Journal on the discrimination problem on Airbnb.

UMKC Law First to Offer Abandoned Properties Clinic

UMKC School of Law strives to provide experiential learning opportunities that will carry students into their careers. In the new Abandoned Property Clinic, instated in Fall 2015, David White, an Adjunct Professor at UMKC Law and an attorney at Foland, Wickens, Eisfelder, Roper & Hofer, P.C., teaches a small group of students how to free up abandoned properties for use.

UMKC Law Hosts Hack Kansas City!

IMG_1845 (1)On June 4 and 5, developers, government employees, students, designers, and community members collaborated for Hack Kansas City, the local version of the National Day of Civic Hacking. Sponsored by Code for America Brigade, KC Digital Drive and UMKC School of Law, Hack Kansas City enabled teams to address specific problems associated with their civic applications and tools.

UMKC Law Students Compete in Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition

From May 22-27, 2016, two UMKC School of Law students, Chriska François and Joli Patel, competed in the 21st Annual Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Washington, D.C. at the American University College of Law. The competition trains students how to use the Inter-American human rights legal system to redress human rights violations. Althoug the team did not advance, François was awarded Best Oralist in the State in English.

Show Me Challenge Champions - Washburn University School of Law

In the spring 2016 issues of the National Jurist, UMKC School of Law was ranked #12 on the Best Schools for Practical Skills Training and later rated an A- in Trial Advocacy. UMKC Law’s advocacy program continues to grow each year, and the Show Me Challenge has become a nationally respected and successful part of the program. In addition, Trial Advocacy students have been led to many tournament victories throughout the past few years.

UMKC Law Ranks 12th in the Nation in The National Jurist’s “Best Schools for Practical Training”
