UMKC Law Team Wins Regional National Trial Competition

For the third time in the last five years, UMKC has a team advancing to nationals in National Trial Competition. The team of Blake Smith, Jackson Hobbs, and Andrew Hendrick were the regional winners of the National Trial Competition held in St. Louis. Hobbs is a second year law student at UMKC, whereas Hendrick and Smith are both third year law students. They will travel to Fort Worth, TX from March 22-25, to compete at the National Tournament.

Family Law Society Hosts 7th Annual Trivia Night

On February 24, the Family Law Society hosted its seventh annual Trivia Night fundraiser at Visions Reception Hall. Each year, the Family Law Society sponsors the event to raise money for the Child and Family Law Services Clinic.

Last Team Standing Competition Offers Mock Trial Inspiration for 1L Students

On February 25-26, sixteen UMKC Law student teams competed in the 1L Last Team Standing Competition at law school. The Last Team Standing Mock Trial Competition is in its fifth year and is continuously providing insights and inspirations for 1L students at UMKC School of Law. This year’s last team standing was comprised of Ashley Crisafulli and Jordan Dollar, and the finalists were Melody Roberts and Sarah Smith.

The Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City hosted their second annual Black History Month fundraiser featuring keynote speaker, Emanuel Cleaver II on Saturday, February 25. UMKC School of Law was one of the many sponsors of the luncheon.

UMKC Receives Private Papers of Alumnus Charles Evans Whittaker

On February 17, the University of Missouri-Kansas City received forty linear feet of private papers for Justice Charles Evans Whittaker from the U.S. Supreme Court Archive. An archivist is now curating these documents at the Miller Nichols LaBudde Special Collections Library.

Professor Tony Luppino Awarded UM System Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year

Tony Luppino, UMKC Rubey M. Hulen Professor of Law and Director of the Law School’s Entrepreneurship Programs  was recognized with the first UM System Entrepreneurship Education of the Year award on Friday, Feb. 3, during the inaugural UM System Entrepreneurial Educators Summit in Columbia, MO.  The award recognizes his distinguished activity in developing and nurturing entrepreneurs.

UMKC Law Launches Professor’s New, Improved “Famous Trials” Website

Famous Trials” first appeared on the Web in 1995, making the website older than about 99.96% of all websites. In 2016, the site seemed to be showing its age. Famous Trials 2.0 debuts today, February 14, 2017, with a cleaner look, additional video and audio clips, revised trial accounts, and new features that should improve navigation around the site. You can find the new homepage here. (For the foreseeable future, the old homepage will remain up and provide links to materials at the new site.)

UMKC Law Hosts ABA Client Counseling Competition

On Saturday, February 4, the law school hosted the regionals for the ABA Client Counseling Competition. Under the direction of Professor Meg Reuter, and the assistance of Cara McLaughlin and Sara Holdmeyer of Bryan Cave, UMKC Law students went up against ten other teams from all over the country.
