UMKC Law Team Wins Regnier Venture Creation Challenge

Two UMKC School of Law teams came in first and second place in the recent Regnier Venture Creation Challenge, in the division of Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation. The Challenge is a two-day business plan and speed pitch competition promoting entrepreneurship and new venture development for university students in Missouri and Kansas and current Entrepreneurship Scholars. The competition, underwritten by a generous gift to the University of Missouri – Kansas City by the Regnier Family Foundations, is designed to encourage venture creation through a forum in which students and program participants can present new venture concepts to local investors, business leaders, mentors and judges.

Law School Faculty Awarded For Outstanding Service and Accomplishments

On Thursday, May 4 2017, UMKC School of Law hosted a Faculty Luncheon at the Diastole Scholar’s Center to recognize and award faculty members for their service and accomplishments. Our successful programs are made possible by our dedicated faculty, and they continue to improve different aspects of law education to benefit students.

Graduates Honored at Alumni Achievement Awards

Each year, the UMKC Alumni Association and the campus celebrate the outstanding achievements of UMKC graduates at the Alumni Awards Luncheon. The luncheon was held April 20, 2017. This year, the association recognized two School of Law alumni for their contributions to the legal community. Proceeds from the Alumni Awards event benefit UMKC students through supporting both endowed and immediate aid.

US News and World Report Ranks UMKC School of Law Advocacy Program Number 21 in the Nation

For the first time, US News and World Report has ranked the UMKC School of Law Trial Advocacy Program as number 21 in the nation. The advocacy program has continued to flourish under Douglas R. Stripp Professor, Rafe Foreman, and Professor Michaelle Tobin. UMKC teams have continually advanced in competitions, and just this spring, three teams advanced to national trial competitions. The program receives support from the UMKC Law Foundation, firms, and alumni, and the law school was also awarded  $1.4 million from the Kemper Family Foundations to expand the program even further.

UMKC Law Finishes in Top Eight Teams in the National Trial Competition

The National Trial Competition, established in 1975, is the oldest and most prestigious trial competition in the United States. UMKC Law has advanced to the national tournament three times in the past five years. This year, from March 22-25, Blake Smith (J.D. ’17) and Jackson Hobbs (J.D. ’17) made it to the quarterfinals, finishing in the top eight teams out of the 28 teams entered.

UMKC Law Competes in Nationals for American Association for Justice Competition

After winning regionals in the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Student Trial Competition, the team of Mollie Harmon (J.D. ’17), Nick Schmiemeier (J.D. ’17), Allison Stephens (J.D. ’18), and Taylor Haas (J.D. ’17) competed in the national tournament in Cleveland, Oh. from March 27 – April 2, 2017. This competition started with 224 teams all across the country, and only 16 teams advanced to AAJ Nationals. We invited two of the team members to share their experiences and feedback from the tournament.

The National Jurist Recognizes UMKC Law as a Top School for Technology and Practical Training

The National Jurist PreLaw magazine has announced this year’s “Best Schools for Practical Training” for 2017 and UMKC School of Law has made the list for the second year in a row. UMKC Law was also listed in the Top 15 Schools for Technology Law Offerings.

UMKC Law Members Honored at 2017 Women’s Justice Awards

The 19th Annual Women’s Justice Awards will be held in St Louis, MO on April 27, 2017. The Awards are to celebrate and recognize women lawyers, law students, up-and-comers, entrepreneurs, public officials and upstanding citizens. Recipients are chosen by a committee of prominent judges and lawyers from around the state, many of whom are past Women’s Justice Award recipients.

Associate Dean Allen Rostron Awarded 2017 Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Associate Dean of Students and Professor of Law, Allen Rostron, has been named the recipient of the 2017 Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is presented to a single outstanding faculty member at each participating Missouri college or university.

UMKC Law Advances in National Criminal Justice Trial Competition

The UMKC School of Law mock trial team struck again. From Thursday, March 16 to Saturday, March 18, a team of four students competed in the National Criminal Justice Trial Competition in Chicago, IL. This makes the third consecutive UMKC advance to the final four round of a competition this spring.
