UMKC Law and Kansas City Youth Court Host “Know Your Rights” Event

On Sept. 16, 2017, Kansas City Youth Court (KCYC) and UMKC School of Law hosted the event “Know Your Rights and Learn the Law” in honor of Constitution Day.  Youth between the ages of 12-19 and their parents or guardians were invited to hear members of the police force and local attorneys discuss how to safely interact with the police without unintentionally aggravating the situation. Recent history has led many to focus on the relationship between law enforcement practices, racial discrimination or bias and escalating harm to community members.   The KCYC wants to be a part of the solution to keeping kids safe through education and discourse.

UMKC School of Law Provides Free Document Assistance for DACA Renewal

UMKC School of Law will provide free assistance to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) applicants (DREAMers) who are eligible to renew their applications before the Oct. 5 deadline set by the White House.

Missouri Bar Elects Alumni to Leadership Academy Class

The Missouri Bar has selected 13 outstanding young lawyers for The Missouri Bar Leadership Academy’s Class of 2017-2018. This is the 18th class and two UMKC School of Law alumni have been chosen to serve: Heather Hardinger (J.D. ’10) and Jacob Lewis (J.D. ’14).

UMKC School of Law Alumni Hired in New Law and Technology Positions

Kate Garman (left) and Bryan Wilson (right) are both starting new rolesUMKC School of Law alumni who were players in the law school’s Year of Technology in 2016 are moving up in the legal community. Bryan Wilson (J.D. ’16) has been named a fellow of the American Bar Association Center for Innovation. Kate Garman, also of the class of 2016, has departed from her role as Innovation Analyst for the City of Kansas City to become the first Smart City Coordinator for the City of Seattle. Both graduates developed their technology skills in courses where they gained important insights into the value of effective use of technology in improving law and law-related processes.

Q&A with Erin Steward (J.D. ’16)

Erin Steward (J.D.'16) in the E.E. Thompson CourtroomThe first lawyer in her family, Erin Steward (J.D. ’16) initially came to law school to become an FBI agent. Between leading the UMKC Federal Bar Association, Phi Delta Phi and the Honor Court, she also participated in the first Thomson Reuters Product Design Challenge. She and her team won the competition, and Steward is now a design advisor at Thomson Reuters.
