Defending the Home Front: An Excerpt from Res Ipsa

The Fall 2017 issue of the UMKC School of Law alumni magazine, Res Ipsa, highlights alumni who are working to develop housing and community spaces for those in need. In this excerpt from “Defending the Home Front,”  alumni are providing shelter for homeless veterans, creating affordable housing for Native Americans and fighting the war against vacant structures that threaten to destroy entire neighborhoods. While their actions differ, their mission is the same: Home sweet home.

Free(D) Lamonte: UMKC Students Help Build the Case for McIntyre

Lamonte McIntyre, Prof. Lindsay Runnels, and Interim Dean Barbara Glesner Fines interact at the Exoneration CelebrationOn Friday, October 13, Lamonte McIntyre, wrongly convicted for a double-murder in Kansas City, Kansas in 1994, walked free after spending 23 years in prison. The UMKC Innocence Project Clinic, under the direction of Lindsay Runnels, is part of the team who achieved this outcome. In addition, the Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) Attorney, Tricia Bushnell, and investigator, Quinn O’Brien, serve as adjunct faculty at the law school, teaching the fact investigation course. UMKC School of Law students played an important role in rallying support, conducting juror interviews, planning events and helping litigate the case for McIntyre’s freedom.

UMKC Offers Scholarships for LSAT Prep Courses and the UMKC Bar Prep Program

With the aid of a generous $10,000 diversity grant from The Shook Foundation, the UMKC School of Law will be able to extend their support for diverse students who are preparing for the LSAT and the Bar Examination. The law school will now be able to further assist diverse students with their study and career development. UMKC School of Law and Get Smarter Prep are partnering to offering LSAT preparation courses and the grant will also fund scholarships for the UMKC Bar Prep Program.

UMKC School of Law Student Tries Case in Texas County

Ryan Krupp, a third year law student at UMKC School of Law, tried his first jury trial on November 1, 2017. Professor S. Rafe Foreman’s Master of Clinical Advocacy course offers students unique opportunities to get their hands on real cases. Under the advisement and supervision of Parke Stevens, Jr. (J.D. ’13), Prosecuting Attorney for Texas County, and Foreman, Krupp was able to confidently try the case.
