Free(D) Lamonte: UMKC Students Help Build the Case for McIntyre

Lamonte McIntyre, Prof. Lindsay Runnels, and Interim Dean Barbara Glesner Fines interact at the Exoneration CelebrationOn Friday, October 13, Lamonte McIntyre, wrongly convicted for a double-murder in Kansas City, Kansas in 1994, walked free after spending 23 years in prison. The UMKC Innocence Project Clinic, under the direction of Lindsay Runnels, is part of the team who achieved this outcome. In addition, the Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) Attorney, Tricia Bushnell, and investigator, Quinn O’Brien, serve as adjunct faculty at the law school, teaching the fact investigation course. UMKC School of Law students played an important role in rallying support, conducting juror interviews, planning events and helping litigate the case for McIntyre’s freedom.

UMKC Offers Scholarships for LSAT Prep Courses and the UMKC Bar Prep Program

With the aid of a generous $10,000 diversity grant from The Shook Foundation, the UMKC School of Law will be able to extend their support for diverse students who are preparing for the LSAT and the Bar Examination. The law school will now be able to further assist diverse students with their study and career development. UMKC School of Law and Get Smarter Prep are partnering to offering LSAT preparation courses and the grant will also fund scholarships for the UMKC Bar Prep Program.

UMKC School of Law Student Tries Case in Texas County

Ryan Krupp, a third year law student at UMKC School of Law, tried his first jury trial on November 1, 2017. Professor S. Rafe Foreman’s Master of Clinical Advocacy course offers students unique opportunities to get their hands on real cases. Under the advisement and supervision of Parke Stevens, Jr. (J.D. ’13), Prosecuting Attorney for Texas County, and Foreman, Krupp was able to confidently try the case.

The Kansas City Business Journal’s Best of the Bar acknowledges the work of accomplished lawyers in Kansas City and highlights local companies and clients the names of notable attorneys in select practice areas. This year, twelve UMKC School of Law alumni were included on the list.

Since 1978, the UMKC School of Law has been providing high-quality continuing legal education seminars and events to professionals in the Kansas City legal community and beyond. This year, the UMKC School of Law Continuing Legal Education (CLE) department as the number one CLE provider in Kansas by the the Kansas CLE Commission.

UMKC Law and Kansas City Youth Court Host “Know Your Rights” Event

On Sept. 16, 2017, Kansas City Youth Court (KCYC) and UMKC School of Law hosted the event “Know Your Rights and Learn the Law” in honor of Constitution Day.  Youth between the ages of 12-19 and their parents or guardians were invited to hear members of the police force and local attorneys discuss how to safely interact with the police without unintentionally aggravating the situation. Recent history has led many to focus on the relationship between law enforcement practices, racial discrimination or bias and escalating harm to community members.   The KCYC wants to be a part of the solution to keeping kids safe through education and discourse.

UMKC School of Law Provides Free Document Assistance for DACA Renewal

UMKC School of Law will provide free assistance to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) applicants (DREAMers) who are eligible to renew their applications before the Oct. 5 deadline set by the White House.

Missouri Bar Elects Alumni to Leadership Academy Class

The Missouri Bar has selected 13 outstanding young lawyers for The Missouri Bar Leadership Academy’s Class of 2017-2018. This is the 18th class and two UMKC School of Law alumni have been chosen to serve: Heather Hardinger (J.D. ’10) and Jacob Lewis (J.D. ’14).
