Lauderdale, FL. Another LawMeet student team, consisting of Joey Harris, Andrew Potter and Sarah Smith, competed in the same competition in the regionals in Provo, Utah and received Best Draft.

UMKC Students Place Second in International Patent Drafting Competition

UMKC Int Patent Drafting Team 2018From February 23-24, third year law students, Benjamin Bolin, Andrew Gnefkow and Greg Tourigny competed in the International Patent Drafting Competition. The team advanced and took home the second place trophy. This was the first time UMKC competed in the competition.

FaCET Conference Introduces UMKC Law Inspired “Know Your Rights” Initiative

Prof. Dan Weddle at the FaCET ConferenceBack in September 2017, UMKC School of Law and the Kansas City Youth Court hosted, “Know Your Rights and Learn the Law,” in honor of Constitution Day. Members of the police force and local attorneys taught youths (ages 12-19) and parents how to interact with police without unintentionally aggravating the situation at hand. The “Know Your Rights” event sparked a new initiative, led by Provost Barbara A. Bichelmeyer and a committee of faculty, staff and students, to ensure the UMKC community is aware of their rights, know what to do regarding possible right violations, and how manage various scenarios. The 2018 Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching (FaCET) Conference served as a launching point for the new initiative.

UMKC Law Team Wins “Best Written Submission” at Tax Challenge

Carley Newberry, Wendy Hoelting, and Prof. Judy Wiseman at the ABA Tax ChallengeCarley Newberry (J.D. ’18) and Wendy Hoelting (J.D. ’18) were selected as one of the six national semi-finalist teams in the ABA Section of Taxation Law School Tax Challenge. On February 9, 2018, the pair competed in the oral rounds at the ABA Section of Taxation Midyear Meeting and won “Best Written Submission” for the whole J.D. division. Newberry and Hoelting join the list of six other UMKC School of Law teams that have taken top awards at the Law School Tax Challenge since 2009.

Trial Advocacy Receives A- Ranking from preLaw Magazine

In the winter 2018 issue of the prelaw Magazine, a National Jurist publication, UMKC School of Law was ranked A- on the list of Best Schools for Trial Advocacy. The School of Law’s advocacy program continues to grow each year, and the Show Me Challenge has become a nationally respected and successful part of the program. In addition, trial advocacy students have been led to many tournament victories throughout the past few years.
