Why is alumni participation important?

For the past decade, the law school’s alumni participation rate has been in the 9% to 10% range. The goal is to at least double that rate by 2020. The goal for 2015-16 is at least 12%, with the rate increasing at least 2% every year to reach 20%.

The alumni participation rate is important for several reasons: the reputation of the law school, funding new initiatives and achieving the highest participation rate at UMKC.

Reputation of the school –20% consistent alumni participation rate is reflective of a law school that is similar in culture, location and demographics of UMKC. A 20% rate is a credible rate that we can promote to potential funders to demonstrate the value that alumni place on their legal education at UMKC.

Funding new initiatives – an increased giving rate will also generate new dollars that can initiate new innovate programs at the law school to benefit students.

UMKC alumni participation rate – an increasing rate of alumni participation will demonstrate to the UMKC administration and other decision makers the importance of the law school to UMKC, Kansas City area and the state of Missouri.

What programs are supported by the Law Foundation Annual Fund?

The largest budget expenditure goes to support student teams that compete in tournaments and competitions across the nation. These include tournaments based on advocacy, client counseling, transactional law, intellectual property, international law and others. These competitions provide students exceptional learning opportunities and elevate the stature of the law school among our peer law schools.

Money is also budgeted to support student programs and events, including special funding for diversity programs.

As mentioned above, the printing and mailing of the alumni magazine, Res Ipsa is also supported by gifts to the Law Foundation Annual Fund.

How will my gift be used?

Your annual gift is combined with hundreds of other alumni gifts that will support our students. In fact, 92 cents of each dollar donated goes to support programs that will enhance our students’ legal education. The other eight cents of every dollar is used to print and mail Res Ipsa, the bi-annual magazine sent to alumni and friends of the law school.

Why should I make a gift to the Law School?

Your gift to the Law Foundation Annual fund is certain to create opportunities for our students and to elevate excellence at the UMKC School of Law.
