Why UMKC?
We take pride in being an urban public law school that has a small liberal arts feel. If you are looking for a school where everyone knows your name, a school that fosters intellectual excitement and values practical skills and community involvement, UMKC is the right choice for you.
Academics
Our academic program bridges the gap between theory and practice, giving students the opportunity to develop strong lawyering skills while learning the law and gaining exposure to the big picture issues that lawyers face in a complex society. We offer a broad range of skills and simulations courses, externships and clinics. Our emphasis areas and Solo and Small Firm Initiative allow for “specialization” in areas of interest, and our Inns of UMKC mentoring program provides students with opportunities for networking and an introduction to professionalism.
Faculty
Our faculty, who have extensive practice experience, are outstanding scholars – intellectual leaders in law who have written books and articles of importance to lawyers and the legal profession. And, as importantly, they are excellent teachers who are committed to their students. Located in suites where students have offices and carrels, they are accessible to students on a regular basis.
Commitment
The UMKC School of Law is committed to the success of its students. Our Student Services staff go out of their way to assist with the day-to-day issues that can get it the way of academic success. Our Laptop Clinic repairs student computers at no cost, and our academic strategies program provides assistance with the skills necessary for effective law study.
We are dedicated to educating students to become outstanding lawyers who will serve their communities and the nation in the highest traditions of the legal profession, concentrating always on the foundations of good lawyering: respect for people; respect for ideas and respect for justice. Our Pro Bono/Public Service Program recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to helping others.
Alumni
Our alumni achievements reflect the strength and reputation of the School. UMKC is one of only six law schools to have educated both a President of the United States and a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Nationwide, 144 judges are UMKC graduates; 96 of them in Kansas or Missouri. Alumni are counsel to major national corporations, leaders of large and small law firms, successful business people and leaders in public service. With our successful bar preparation program and our effective career services efforts, you can become one of these success stories.
