Law school is about more than just attending class, and UMKC sets itself apart from other law schools by creating a collaborative community of students, faculty, and staff. We strongly believe that law school should prepare students to be not only great legal thinkers and professionals, but to be influential leaders, informed advocates, and engaged citizens. It is for this reason that the very concept of ‘community’ is central to the School and the ways in which we build and sustain relationships with our students.
The unique quality of engagement that is fostered at UMKC School of Law is made clear from the very start of your student career, marked with a matriculation ceremony during which each student is personally greeted by our deans and members of faculty before taking his or her Oath of Admission. Our classes are small and participatory; you will come to know your professors well, and you will collaborate with them regularly on legal journals, through clinics, and in our many programs and organizations such as moot court and mock trial.
The UMKC School of Law is committed to the success of its students. Our Student Services staff go out of their way to assist with the day-to-day issues that can get it the way of academic success. Services available include personal counseling, academic guidance, IT and tech support, disability support, ESL support, and support for veterans.
Our faculty, who have extensive practice experience, are outstanding scholars – intellectual leaders in law who have written books and articles of importance to lawyers and the legal profession. And, as importantly, they are excellent teachers who are committed to their students. The level of accessibility they offer their students is not easily surpassed; our faculty offices are located in suites where students have offices and carrels, thereby enhancing opportunities for the collaboration and cooperation for which UMKC Law is known.
A legal education requires critical engagement and communication, and we strive to help students develop these skills in order to best respond and adapt to challenges. You can put theory into practice in one of our many clinics which range from child and family services to entrepreneurial legal services to the Midwest Innocence Project, each of which give students the opportunity to work directly with real clients under the supervision of our faculty. Further, our location within a research university allows for exciting interdisciplinary learning opportunities, pairing your legal studies with other areas such as business and even science and engineering.
A tremendous strength of UMKC Law is our ideal location in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri.
