UMKC is dedicated to supporting and promoting diversity within the legal profession while supporting the foundations of good lawyering: respect for people, knowledge, ideas and justice. Explore our programs below and learn how you can become part of our community.
Discover Law Plus Program
The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law is proud to be a partner school for the LSAC DiscoverLaw.org Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars Program. PLUS summer programs are targeted to but not restricted to college students from racial and ethnic minority groups underrepresented in the legal profession. UMKC’s PLUS summer institute includes a 4-week intensive academic and lawyering skills program designed to familiarize students with scholarly and professional expectations for law students. After successful completion of this coursework and affiliated field trips, students will then be placed in a 2-week legal internship at a law firm, courthouse, or corporation in the Kansas City metro region.
Lunch and Learns
The 1L Enrichment Program for diverse first-year students is hosted in conjunction with Seigfreid Bingham, PC. This program offers lunch and learn sessions facilitated by recent graduates and experienced attorneys on topics such as study habits, test preparation and career development. Students also benefit from the Annual Diversity Luncheon with Legal Aid of Missouri.
Discover Law Day
Discover Law Day is a law school access program that introduces underrepresented students to the field of law. Participants have the opportunity to attend a mock class, speak to current students and admissions staff, and hear about the legal profession from judges, lawyers, and faculty.
UMKC School of Law is a proud participant in other diversity events in the Kansas City community and nationwide. Some of these events include the UMKC Pride Breakfast, PREP KC, Kauffman Scholars program, Latinos of Tomorrow, HBCU Showcase, McNair Heartland Research Institute, NAPABA Conference, CLEO Summer Institute.
