Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Barbara A. Bichelmeyer has announced that Barbara Glesner Fines has agreed to serve as Interim Dean of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law.

Glesner Fines stepped in to serve as acting dean when outgoing Dean Ellen Suni’s health issues led her to step down ahead of schedule.

“We have complete confidence in Barbara’s ability to provide strong and effective leadership for the school as we undertake the national search process,” Bichelmeyer said.

Endowed as the Rubey M. Hulen Professor of Law, Glesner Fines received her master of law degree from Yale University and her J.D. (cum laude) from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Her research addresses issues in professional responsibility issues, family law, and legal education. She has pioneered important innovations in teaching professional responsibility and the formation of professional identity, and was recognized with the 2016 Trustees Faculty Fellowship Award.

“UMKC Law School delivers real value, a supportive student-centered environment, and strong community collaborations. While our leadership is changing, that essential identity is not going to change. ” Glesner Fines said. “It is a great honor to be able to follow the leadership of Dean Suni, who has placed UMKC School of Law in the national spotlight as a school that prepares students for the future – using technology and entrepreneurial principles as tools to improve practice and access to justice, refining traditional tools of advocacy and counseling through an experience-driven curriculum, and preparing students to serve an increasingly multicultural global community.”
