Graduation requirements

Graduation takes place each spring, summer and fall semester. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have met all requirements and deadlines.

  1. Apply for graduation
A completed application form must be submitted by the following deadline:

September 17, 2012 Last day to file for December 2012 graduation
February 18, 2013 Last day to file for May 2013 graduation
June 21, 2013 Last day to file for Summer 2013 graduation

NOTE: If for any reason your graduation date changes after filing the application, you must file a new graduation application designating your new anticipated graduation date.

  1. Pay all outstanding balances
The university will not permit the law school to certify your graduation or provide the student transcripts to the bar authorities if you have a balance due on your university account.
  2. Complete R&W paper
Your paper must be approved by your supervising faculty member, and a signed R&W completion form turned in to the registrar, by the following deadline:

    Graduation R&W form due
    December 2012 December 15, 2012
    May 2013 May 17, 2013
    Summer 2013 July 24 , 2013

Most faculty members do not have much time to review R&W papers during the final exam period, so plan on submitting your final draft early to ensure you meet the certification deadline.
Bar Examination submissions

The Missouri Board of Law Examiners:  Rule 8.07(c) requires that persons taking the bar examination must have met all the requirements for a J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. If you have any additional questions contact the Missouri Board of Law Examiners by phone at 573-751-9814 or by email.

The Kansas bar exam: Proof that an applicant has been granted and holds the requisite degrees shall be provided to the Clerk of the Appellate Courts by the UMKC Registrar. An official transcript must be received by the Kansas Board no later than June 15 for the July exam and January 15 for the February exam.  If you have any additional questions contact the Kansas Board of Law Examiners by phone at 785-296-8410 or by email.

To ensure the official transcript is timely, request the transcript from the university Registrar's office prior to graduation with an instruction that it be sent to the Board of Law Examiners immediately after degree completion is posted. You need to provide the UMKC Registrar's office with the name and address of the Bar office to receive the official transcript. The request form may be obtained here. Be sure to check the item on the form that indicates “Hold for Degree”.

Note: Faculty CANNOT extend the graduation/bar certification deadlines.
