Because of UMKC’s close relationship with the bench and bar in the region, students have numerous diverse externship opportunities. About half of all students each year take advantage of this unique experiential learning opportunity. Externships place students with state and federal judges; with federal or state agencies, such as the Jackson County Prosecutor Office, the EPA, and the NLRB; in federal and state public defender offices; and in law offices providing legal services to low income persons. Many faculty members supervising our externships often have worked with their supervising attorney counterparts for over twenty years, providing rich ties between the classroom courses and the externship experiences.
