The study of intellectual property encompasses a few main areas: copyright, patent and trademark law, as well as related business torts and unfair competition claims. In today’s economy, companies rely upon these intellectual property rights to distinguish themselves from the competition and to be successful.

Being in a large metropolitan area allows the UMKC School of Law to offer students robust experiences in intellectual property with professors who have expertise and practice experience. We offer classes in core, substantive material as well as courses and clinical experiences that integrate practice skills, allowing students the opportunity to learn difficult skills before becoming a lawyer. The School of Law has also created a number of opportunities for students to interact with (and learn from) local practitioners in more informal settings.

Given the range of available options, students interested in intellectual property may choose to focus on one aspect or may delve into understanding two or more intellectual property areas. The faculty support students in identifying the individual blend of classes that will maximize their knowledge and opportunities.
